INTERNATIONAL METEOR CONFERENCE, 15. - 18. September 2005, Oostmalle, Belgium

The International Meteor Conference 2005 (IMC 2005) was organized by Urania, the public observatory of Antwerp. It was held in Oostmalle, a small village on the NE of Belgium, at the so-called 'Provinciaal Vormingscentrum Malle', a conference center and youth accommodation owned by the Province of Antwerp.

Nearly 100 participants from all over the world (Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Slovenia, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Venezuela) joined IMC for this four-day event. During more than 40 lectures, professional and amateur astronomers interested in meteor astronomy reported about their work. All the lectures were held in a conference room with a capacity of about 100 people. In the Provinciaal Vormingscentrum Malle we also had few pc's with internet connections.

The first day (September 15) was the arriving day. Already before the dinner we acquainted 10-15 people. After the dinner, at 20 o'clock we had evening program – lectures about Perseid observations from Romania (Andrei Dorian Gheorghe) and Juan Martin Semegone's one-year trip to Antarctica.

The lectures of the second day (September 16) were all about radio meteor observations. These day Geoffrey Grayer has held a lecture about the detection of Meteors by Electrostatics. It was for us very interesting because we plan a very similar project at Tican Observatory.... Also a very interesting lecture was "The Impact of Impacts". It was a guest lecture from Prof. Dr. Philippe Claeys (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). Professor Claeys is a geologist whose active research interests include the bio-geo-evolution of the Earth, global changes, rapid climatic changes and mass extinction events, effects of asteroid and comet impacts on the global Earth system, isotope geochemistry, stratigraphy/geochronology, sedimentology & sedimentary petrography, and planetary science. He is currently involved in some exciting research on the Chicxulub crater (Yucatàn, Mexico)....

The topics of the third conference day (September 17) were video and photography observations and meteor streams, but the highlight of the day was excursion to the city of Lier. Lier is a small city at about 25km of the conference center. We visited the astronomical clock of the 'Zimmertoren' and the beautiful beguinage of the city.

On the last day (Sepember 18 ) the lectures have been until 14:00, because it was the departure day. One of most interesting lecture (for us) at this day was «The first detected Martian meteor» (Jeremie Vaubaillon).

The IMC is a very nice experience where you can meet many people, see what for ideas they have and learn a lot theory. We hope we will stay in contact and cooperate in the future with them. The next conference will be organised in the Netherlands and we hope we will be there!
